Our goal is to provide a well-rounded, Christ centered education for our students. At each grade level, students are challenged both academically and spiritually to grow in the faith and love for Jesus Christ as their personal savior.
Accelerated Reading Program
DCCS offers an excellent supplemental reading program that encourages students to put their reading skills to practice. Accelerated Reader is the computerized learning information system designed to help us motivate, monitor and manage student reading practice. As the student passes the book quiz, they earn various levels of certification.
Each school year student reading levels are assessed with an easy testing process. Once they have completed the assessment, students can start reading and earning their certifications.
We have used this program school wide for many years and our students continue to have great improvement in all grades on reading comprehension and understanding.
At each level students earn a different certification and receives a special prize. Click here for more information.
In accordance with our mission statement, all grade levels have a planned chapel time. Chapel is held every Friday morning in the church sanctuary. Chapel provides a special time for students to worship and honor God as a community of believers. Parents are invited to attend when they are able. Each grade has the opportunity to present two chapels during the course of the year. These are popular dates for friends and family to attend chapel. The other chapels are conducted by our Pastoral Staff members. Occasionally, we have “special guests” who have a relevant and captivating message for the students.
Math Olympics is an annual opportunity for students of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade levels to enjoy mental challenges using math skills and logical reasoning. The students work in age based groups solving a variety of problems. This competition takes place in February so that the top place winners can go on to compete in March at an ACSI Regional Event. All students become winners simply by taking on the challenge to participate in these games.
Music has a long history at DCCS. DCCS students have many opportunities each year to minister through music. Grades K - 5 are invited often to sing in numerous church services as well as presenting two annual musicals.
Different musical productions are chosen each year to accent our student’s abilities. Every student participates in these special productions. Students are given the opportunity for solos, both speaking and song, as well as in 5th grade students are encouraged to perform longer speaking parts.
The speech meet is an annual springtime event at DCCS. This event gives students an opportunity to develop communication skills and techniques to speak audibly, articulately, expressively and with poise and confidence in audience situation. After a school wide competition in April, winners advance to an ACSI regional meet in May.
Desert Chapel Elementary School hosts an in-house Spelling Bee near the end of the school year. The ACSI guidelines are followed and their lists are used. We also make a special effort to include our Kindergarten friends! There is a first, second and third place winner in each grade!
This is a fun and exciting way to reinforce all that the students have been working on throughout the year.
